Why Take a Tour Through Western australia?

Why Western Australia?

Western Australia.
There’s nothing like it.

With a state the size of Western Europe, it’s no wonder there’s a lot to see. Rudall River, our biggest national park is the same size as England and we usually encounter less than 20 other people when we lead our tours through there.

The East Pilbara Shire is the largest shire in the world, yet it has a population of 9,000 people. This is one of the reasons we run tours in this area, because not only is it some of the most awe-inspiring scenery anywhere, we usually have it to ourselves.

As tour guides, we try our best to show people as much of Western Australia as possible, without rushing. Even then, we know we’re barely scratching the surface with a single 4WD tour.

Even after we show you Windjana Gorge, Tunnel Creek, Karijini or Mitchell Falls, there’ll be so much more to see and you’ll be hooked.

So be warned: Once you see some of the majesty of WA by joining us on a 4WD tour, there’s no going back. You’ll be an explorer from that moment onwards.

Outback for Beginners | Holland Track & Goldfields

One of the wonders of Western Australia is the sheer amount of different landscapes it has to offer.

The South Coast has absolutely world-class moody, rock-lined beaches. The Goldfields has desertscapes like you wouldn’t believe. The Kimberley region has turquoise waters meeting red sands in a tropical paradise.

WA does have so many wonderful areas, but it’s a very long way between regions.

The Holland Track and surrounds is the closest thing Western Australia has to a sample pack of outback landscapes.
Starting at the North end, with monumental natural structures such as Victoria Rocks, Thursday Rock or Sandalwood Rocks, you could be forgiven for thinking you were looking at a smaller Uluru, albeit in a bushland setting. Within a few hours of off-roading, you can find your way to salt lake desert country where the sheer expanse can take your breath away. A few hours South and you might find yourself nearing the South Coast.

The Pilbara

The Pilbara.

One of the most rugged, beautiful and remote locations on Earth.

In such a vast and varying landscape, why do most tours go on the bitumen, only to camp in a carpark in Karijini?

There’s nothing wrong with generic itineraries and tours, if that’s what you want.

But, the words “adventure” and “remote” still mean something to us.

We’ve been living in and exploring the Pilbara for more than 20 years. Now we get to show you the best parts.

A real, remote adventure.

Three Desert Tour | Gunbarrel Highway, Great Central Road & the Canning Stock Route

The perfect ingredients for a modern day odyssey.

We start in Balladonia on the edge of the Nullarbor and make our way to Rawlinna.

The Connie Sue Highway takes us North through the Great Victoria Desert until we reach the Great Central Road.

The Great Central Road takes us to the David Carnegie Road and to the Gibson Desert.

Further North through the outback and desert scrub, we will reach the Gunbarrel Highway and from there we’ll make our way North West to the Canning Stock Route.

Following the Canning Stock Route North through the Little Sandy Desert, we’ll stay on this historic track as far as well 22, at which point we’ll intersect the Talawana Track and follow it West to Newman.

12 Days from Balladonia to Newman via the Connie Sue Highway, Great Central Road, Gunbarrel Highway and Canning Stock Route, which will see us cross 3 of Western Australia’s 5 deserts.

What Does a Tag-Along 4WD Tour Involve?

Tag-Along/Self-Drive 4WD Tours

Off-road tours.

There’s many options of adventure tours in Western Australia, that can sound quite similar. What we offer are self-drive 4WD tours where you pilot your own vehicle.

We organise the route, obtain any permits or passes for areas such as national parks and take care of all the planning.

Our small group off-road tours are led by an experienced guide in a lead vehicle. We’ve been there before, know where to go and know how much fuel to take.

Self-drive/tag-along tours allow you to experience the adventure of taking yourself to some of the most wonderful parts of Australia and be self-sufficient, but at the same time providing a safety net. You get to live at the edge of your comfort zone without having to extend past it.

Wild, rugged and beautiful Western Australia awaits.

Frequently Asked Questions

What type of vehicle is required?

A 4WD vehicle with reasonable ground clearance is required. You don’t need a car with a lift kit or other modifications, but it does need to be a 4WD, not an AWD (all-wheel-drive).

AWDs such as Subarus, Audi Q7’s, BMW X5’s, Porsch Cayennes, Range Rovers or similar are unsuitable.

If in doubt, just tell us what you’ve got and we’ll let you know.

Generally, anything similar to the cars listed below are suitable:

  • Toyota Land Cruiser
  • Toyota Prado
  • Toyota Hilux
  • Ford Ranger
  • Nissan Patrol
  • Nissan Navara
  • Mitsubishi Pajero
  • Mitsubishi Triton
  • Isuzu D-Max
  • Holden Colorado
  • Volkswagen Amarok
  • Land Rover Defender
  • Land Rover Discovery
  • Jeep Wrangler
  • Jeep Grand Cherokee
  • Ford Everest
  • Mazda BT-50
  • Suzuki Jimny
Do I need to be an experienced off-roader?

You will be an experienced off-road four wheel driver by the time you’ve finished one of our tours. We can guide you along the way, but if you’re concerned, we can recommend a training course that you can do in advance. If you’re not too sure about putting yourself to the test on a long, remote tour, our Outback for Beginners tour was made just for you.

Can I come on a tour if I don't own a 4WD?

Yes.

We have a few friends in the industry that have fully kitted-out 4WDs available for hire. We’ll gladly put you in touch.

Will there be mobile reception or internet?

There will be reception in some towns and communities that we pass through, but generally we will go for several days at a time without coverage.

We carry satellite phones and communicators, so if anything unexpected happens we do have the ability to get in touch with anyone necessary. If you’re waiting on important news such as a house settling or a grand child being born or anything else that’s important to you, let us know and we’ll make it work.

Some tour operators are advertising that they offer Star Link internet on their tours. What a way to ruin the magic. If the important news you’re waiting on is the cricket score, then we can’t help you. After all, what we’re really offering from Rough As Guts, is full immersion in the Australian Outback. The first few days might be a struggle to unwind and disconnect, but we’ll soon slip into the groove and enjoy the serenity.

Does my 4WD need any modifications?

The main thing you’ll require is a UHF radio, so that we have communication across the convoy. If you don’t have a UHF and don’t want to buy one just for the trip, which is fair enough, then we can lend you a hand-held unit.

For vehicles using hand-helds, we just ask that you travel somewhere near the middle of the group where you’ll have enough range to be in contact with at least one other car.

All terrain tyres are the minimum requirement and mud terrains are even better. We ask that you have approximately 70% or more of the tread remaining before the start of the tour.

Bull bars are a great idea for country driving, but the choice is yours. Most incidents with livestock or kangaroos happen on sealed roads, but we’d hate for something to happen while you’re on your way to the start of the tour.

Winches are a bonus, but not necessary. All our tour vehicles have winches so that if anyone needs a winch recovery (which is not expected), we can winch you out with one of our cars.

Is a long-range tank required?

We base our tour routes and refuelling stops around a standard 70L tank and one Jerry can. We request that each car brings two Jerrys, so that there is a buffer. If you do have a long range tank, you should have more than enough range for any of our tours.

Do I need my own recovery gear?

It’s always a good idea to carry your own recovery gear, but if you don’t have any, that’s no problem. We’ve got you covered, as it’s all part of the service we’re providing.

Will there be time to see the sights, or is it all just driving?

There will be plenty of time to see the sights along the way, and we will take you to a a myriad of cool spots. All of our tours are designed to strike a nice balance between covering ground and taking time to relax and explore the scenery.

Can I bring a camper trailer?

We provide catering and a whole host of amenities, so that there’s no real need for camper trailers. We do understand that everyone has different requirements or may have a back injury and prefer a real bed, so we do cater for trailers where possible.

Our Three Desert tour which covers part of the Canning Stock Route is unsuitable for any trailer. Our other tours can accomodate camper trailers, provided they’re designed specifically for off-road use and are compact. Please get in touch with us before booking, if you are hoping to bring a trailer.

What should I bring?

We have a very detailed packing list that forms part of the information pack, which can easily be downloaded by using one of the forms on this page.

How much of the camping will be in caravan parks?

The only time we stay at caravan parks or station stays with amenities is sometimes on the night before the tour, or on the last night. We like to travel where there are no facilities and instead sleep under a chandelier of stars, far away from civilisation and light pollution.

Are the prices all inclusive?

Absolutely.

We want to be completely upfront with our advertising and not increase the price as you get further through the sale process. We don’t use “from pricing”. The only time you’ll pay more is if you want to bring more than two people in one vehicle and this fee is just to cover the cost of catering and ancillary costs like national park fees etc.

What if I get sick or injured in the middle of nowhere?

Just in case something unexpected happens, we have satellite phones; GPS tracker/communicators; EPIRB/PLBs and radio comms. We are also current with our first-aid training and carry comprehensive emergency kits.

Generally, a stubbed toe caused by a breaking double plugger will be the worst injury on a trip. It’s up to you to bring a spare pair of thongs for such an emergency.

How can I book?

That’s easy. Just use the form to get a copy of the information pack which has all of our tour dates, our terms and conditions and payment policies, and has a link to where you can book directly. Please feel free to call us with any questions you may have. All our contact details are in the info pack.

What Our Google Reviews are saying

Learning from Toby and the crew in a beautiful and secluded location was great. Loved the off road 4WD tour and seeing local flora and fauna. Thank you!

Alex Stumpf

Remote amazing locations I would never be able to take myself.

Just knowing that professionals had the safety aspects of an adventure trip covered so me and my partner could just relax and just take it all in - was absolutely special.

Tim Kershaw

They took us to some of the most remote and gorgeous locations.

For me, the best part was learning along the way. We got stuck, but Toby and Andy knew exactly what to do and we were out in no time. On top of that, they took the time to show us what they were doing and taught us along the way.

Six2Twelve Travel

I only had to take the very basics of personal camping gear and Toby from rough as guts had everything else that was needed including good laughs along the way.

If you want a genuinely amazing time with great people. Toby is your guy.
