This winch plate is made to fit a 79 series V8 Landcruiser (VDJ79). The winch mount has been tested on pre-facelift and post-facelift models. This has not been tested on the 4 cylinder GDJ79.
We all know 79s don’t get bogged, but it’s still important to have a winch so you can pull Nissan Patrols out of the mud to earn yourself owed cartons of beer and enduring gloating rights.
At Rough As Guts, we only make things that we have needed ourselves. Toby, the owner of RAG, drives a 79 series to lead all of our tours and needed to mount a winch, as it provides a much more straight forward and safe recovery if a client gets bogged, compared to a snatch strap. Not happy with existing options, he made the first prototype of this winch plate which is still in use in his cruiser, several tour seasons and many recoveries later. He also writes in third person, to make it seem like we have an entire team that manages the ecommerce side of this website, and not just him. But that’s another story…
Many winch cradles feature fancy engineering with geometric sections to provide additional strength. This doesn’t.
Instead of engineering around the inherent weakness of 5mm steel, we use 8mm steel that doesn’t require workarounds.
It’s based on the pasta bridge idea:
During primary school, most of us had a lesson or home work project where we had to make a bridge using glue and pasta, to demonstrate what we had learned about the strength of different shapes. And the kid that always won, was that one guy that just glued the whole packet of pasta together as one big slab. We present the pasta slab of winch cradles.
This design is for the OEM/Toyota bull bar and has been tested on pre-facelift and post-facelift models.
8mm steel construction engineered for maximum strength and durability.
Direct bolt-on design with preciosn-engineered mounting points.

Dimensions:
Winch mounting bolt holes: 25.4 x 11.43cm which fits most popular brands of winch such as XTM, Warne, Runva, Kings (4WD Supacentre), Ultra Winch and more. The winch mounting holes are elongated to allow for different offsets to accommodate changes to bull bars or other accessories.
Winch plate mounting holes (to bolt to the chassis): 615 x 75mm, with elongated holes to allow for any slight chassis warping which may have occurred from any front end knocks in the bush.
